Similarities
Both Xeomin and Botox are types of injectable neurotoxins containing botulinum toxin type A and are FDA-approved for the reduction of lines and wrinkles.
The two formulas work to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles by halting the muscle contractions associated with expression. Each time you smile or frown, the muscles etch small lines into your skin that, with time, turn into wrinkles. By reducing this muscle movement, the treatments make your skin look softer and less wrinkled — but no less like yourself.
We use Xeomin and Botox for the horizontal lines that appear on your forehead when you raise your eyebrows. The injections can also erase the “11”s that sit between your eyebrows. The creases around your eyes — crow’s feet — also soften in response to the neurotoxin injections.
Temporary fixes
Eventually the effect of the injections wears off and the muscles start to function fully again. Xeomin and Botox both offer wrinkle reduction for about three to four months, after which you need another treatment to maintain your look.
Some people, though, find they develop a resistance to Botox over time, so the injections aren’t as effective in reducing wrinkles. This may have to do with Botox’s formulation, which includes various protective proteins in addition to the neurotoxin. Xeomin doesn’t contain anything but botulinum toxin type A — so you’re less likely to develop antibodies that limit its results.
The immediate effects of Xeomin feel gentler, too. In the days following Botox, you may have a tightening sensation in the treated areas. Xeomin leaves you feeling soft and relaxed as it does its work.
Onset of results
If you desire nearly immediate results, Botox is the way to go. You notice a reduction of wrinkles within about 72 hours. Xeomin takes a bit longer to take effect — usually up to four days.
Care of the injectables
Another difference between the two injectables is how they’re cared for prior to being injected. Xeomin requires no refrigeration prior to use; Botox needs to be kept at cool temperatures. This really isn’t an issue for our practice, but there’s less chance that Xeomin has been mishandled during shipping because it doesn’t have temperature sensitivities.
